Acti-Shake Chocolate

Super starchy feel and a faux-sweetened wheatish taste. You could do a lot worse, but also a lot better with much less effort. Very little chocolate flavor— but if you like that ‘proteiny’ feel, have a go.

Optimel Drink Chocolade

Musty, wet-cardboard flavor can’t be intentional, but it’s common enough in chocolate milk that I’m no longer surprised by it. This drink admittedly doesn’t have much to work with, given the nutritional profile, but perhaps just aiming for ‘bland’ should be the goal of certain producers.

Smiltene Piena Speks Sokolades

So chalky that it turns the inside of your mouth into velcro. It’s not chocolaty, but there’s nothing too nasty about the flavor (if you can get past the chalk). After drinking half of this bottle, my mouth is drier than it was last August after a 7-hour un-airconditioned waterless train ride across Bulgaria.

Mizo Kakao Light Laktozmentes

Palate-destroyingly sweet, and if you can persevere through the onslaught, you will find that your efforts were in vain; there’s nothing else behind it. The flavor isn’t ‘bad’ per se, it’s just rather pointless with something this sweet (artificial or not). I think people are more willing to accept a less-sweet ‘Light’ product— it should’t be amped up with artificial sweeteners to make someone feel that they’re having something indulgent.

Nupo One Meal Low Calorie Cocoa

Great texture, but the flavor is where things go pear-shaped. The taste is akin to a sour vitamin (congruent with the product's scent, at least) and the sweetener makes me salivate post-swallow. Reminds me of when you get hit in the nose and your eyes immediately water, though you're not ‘crying’ per se.

Nestle Nesquik Shake

Sludgy, way over-emulsified, and an off flavor that (in part) is due to cinnamon. It’s definitely sweet, nastily thick, and neither indulgent nor what you expect when seeking a chocolate milkshake experience.
